Your child's birthday party, tips and themes to create a fun day!
Looking for a great party for the space and adventure lover pre-teen in the family? How about a Space Alien party?
First off, of course, everyone knows that the only way a Space Alien could get to the party is if they have arrived in a spacecraft. make building one the first priority of the space party. Your guests can totally involve themselves in the construction and painting of the alien vessel. You will need to find or pruchase about 10 cardboard boxes to asemble into a large ship ahead of time. Get stryofoam balls and pipe cleaners to set up as levers and antenna for inside the ship. Any buy poster paints for the exterior painting. Aluminum foil and toilet paper rolls will also come in handy, as will some quick-setting glue. You could also purchase some glow-in-the-dark paint for a reat effect when the lights are out!
The party ideas are endless here. You could set up a goopy-slimy food creation area with all sorts of alien creations ready to be made. Blind-folded guests could be invited to stick their arms into a bucket of alien-goo made from jello and spaghetti.
For the party food, green kool-aid and jello fits the bill, along with any number of green & gooey treats. A cake in the shape of a spaceship will be a great hit as well.
After the cake and gifts, a space-alien movie would be the next feature of the night, with the spaceship as the backdrop of course! You should really assess the age and maturity level of the guests as you do not want to choose anything too mature for the group as a whole. Go even for the cheesiest B-movies you can find ... hilarity will ensue!
To add to the excitement, you could make a sci-fi movie at your party, capturing all the excitement on your video camera (or, if you do not have one, borrow from a friend or a parent of the party guests.) Create or get a short script (even have your teen write one if they are so inclined!) and cast all of the guests as actors in the feature. Then after a short rehearsal, film your creation and preview it as the trailer for the night's sci-fi feature! The new Flip cameras are great for this, and with an HDMI cable, can hook right up to your TV so everyone can see themselves and join in the fun. And be sure to gently encourage the potentially shy; don't force them to participate, but have a couple of roles ready in your mind that require little of the spoken word. Such as alien glowing in the dark monster, space ship drivers etc ... you get the idea!
Perhaps, at some dramatic point in the movie, a "real" alien might jump out to add to the thrills... ;) Just be sure to make a quick entry and exit - teen parties generally are best left to proceed with as little interference from parental over-acting as possible!
For the goodie bags, glow in the dark erasers, pencils and little alien candy creatures will be a hit. Or for older teens, a classic sci-fi novel will be a great and educational take-away. You might even find 2 or 3 dollar DVD's in the DVD bins at the local department store - another unique and inexpensive takeaway.
Have a "blast" at your party!
