Space Party

If there is one thing that children of all ages are curious about, it is space. They can see the moon, stars and other planets sometimes, but they can’t really touch them. This can lead to a strong fascination with space, which makes it a great theme for a children’s party!

If you are looking for a space theme that's for older children, try the Space Alien Party as well!

To start the fun, let the guests arrive at the party by taking a “moon walk”. Get several large sheets, several pillows and then various unbreakable items. Place the items under the pillows and then cover the pillows with the sheets. Attach the sheets to the floor with tape, large “moon boots” or white “moon rocks”. When the kids walk into the party, you can say this might be what it feels like to walk on the surface of the moon.

Now, you can have some great fun doing space crafts! There are so many to choose from, but a favorite is making a “Planet Mobile”. Using small Styrofoam balls attached to fishing wire, you can make a row of planets on a hanger or a circle of planets from a Styrofoam plate. The guests can paint or color the ‘planets’ with markers. Another fun craft is having the guests create their own constellation. Take a piece of aluminum foil (about the size of a sheet of paper), glue and many silver, gold or white stars. Allow the guest to glue the stars on the foil in their very own constellation design!

If you are musically-inclined, you can make your party educational as well as fun. In one “Blue’s Clues” episode, Steve and Blue skidoo into space and learn all the planets, plus the sun, in order through a song! You can have the guests watch the entire episode, or just the part with the song. After that, you can take cut-outs of each planet and, while singing the song, each child can come up and put the planets in order on a big piece of black poster board!

Food for a space themed party can come right from the space program! Buy some dehydrated foods and let the guests munch on them. Another fun activity is to put some pudding powder in the bottom of a baggie. Add just enough milk and seal tightly. Now the guests can shake and squeeze the bag until the pudding is ready! Just snip of a side of the bag and they can slurp it just like the astronauts do!

When the party is winding down, you can have the guests gather around for outrageous outer space adventures with “Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian” or even “The Jetsons”. Any stories about stars, the moon, the sun, or the planets would be an enjoyable closing activity, too.

As it is getting dark, you could plan some outdoor time to look through a telescope and see what plantels or stars are in good alignment for viewing. You can find this inforamtion online for your latitude and longitude. Plan to borrow a telescope if you do not have one yourself. It would be a good idea though to have enough activites to fill the evening just in case it is a cloudy or rainy night and there is no visibility.

Decorations and paper products are not a problem with a space theme. Large hanging moons and starts, planet mobiles, and space ships will look great on the ceiling! At most local retailers and on several online stores you can find everything you’ll need: invitations, napkins, plates, bowls, cups, decorations, goodie bags and thank you cards. (Tip: when ordering online, leave plenty of time for shipping!)
